Mundowski High: Sweet Land of Puberty!

by Jennifer Robin

Book: Humor, Romance, Adventure, General Fiction

Deena, the school's wild and poetic alcoholic, has her life change forever when she meets Jed, a Lothario in denim with a mother on Meth.

Mundowski High follows six high school misfits who wouldn't want to be stuck in an elevator together.

Meet Deena, the school's alcoholic. At sixteen she has been kicked out of three schools and run away from her evangelical father too many times to count. Adrienne Zollo loves role-playing games. Her overprotective mother guards her so closely she doesn't remember the last time she's walked around the block. Minty, the prankster filmmaker is out to make the most embarrassing video possible of Jojo Stephenson, a rich and isolated doctor’s son addicted to X-rated websites.

Jed McNicholl lives with his bartending mother. He is comfortable with friends who steal cars and listen to speed metal--all of this changes when he falls for Deena Dombrowski. When Deena is locked up in a substance recovery ward of a downtown hospital, she has fevered phone calls with Jed, hoping to convince him to run away with her to a place where she feels she can truly get lost--New York City. He says yes, and this is only the beginning of his troubles.

Catherine 'Monster-face' Rubin passes like a ghost through the halls of Mundowski High and secretly documents all of the above.

Okay so, I'm only on Chapter Five at the moment, but wow. This book is extremely realistic, and by realistic I mean it explains high school so well. Most guys and girls probably think perverted thoughts at some point in time and most writers don't catch that, but with this Book it catches everything a teenager would do in these situations. For some odd reason, I already love Minty, even though I've only read a little bit of this. He seems like such a random character with his red hair. Plus, the idea you had of making him a prankster was genius because, I mean, who doesn't have one of those guy's in their high school?

I also love all the other character's you've introduced, and honestly Jed makes me laugh so easily. The way he sometimes talks about Deena in his thoughts are just hilairious to me for some odd reason, even if they are meant to be utterly disturbing. I especially love how he's nineteen and still in school, it gives the character more of a reason to be act so overaged.

Anyways, I realize this comment is somewhat long (well, at least for me it is) but this story is just so amazing I have to tell you everything I like about it! This is going on my Picks for sure. Also, you've offically got me hooked. :)

Wow, I've read the first couple chapters and this is really good. I can just sense the characters in my mind and it creates a very visual read! Good job! Can't wait to keep reading!

I've just begun reading and automatically noticed it had a MSCL vibe too it. There are so many small details that really bring the work to life. One that sticks out was the pine scented candle from a Christmas cheese basket. I can picture it, I've gotten those baskets and I have given those baskets. Can't wait to read more.

I just read the start, but I really like this! It reminded me of "The Breakfast Club". Good job! :D

This is a book you'd read for the sharp observations and for original collection of characters alone!

(And I love it that school life at Mundowski High is all being 'secretly documented' by Catherine.)

There were a few disconnects in the first chapter where I wasn't sure what was happening, but overall this is pretty cool and very different. It has a little of a 'Breakfast Club' feel together with a great vibe and energy.

Picked!

Hey, I've only read September so far because I'm desperately trying to finish my homework. Remind me if I forget to come back to this.

I'm not entirely sure why you italicized The Ice Age and The Gilded Age. Are they books?

I love how you characterize, especially with the repetition of the names as a whole. It's more open than anything else that I can remember reading, and you use sentence structure really well. My favorite part was probably about Jed's girlfriend's shirt.

I do feel somewhat disconnected from your characters, and while you've established them pretty well here, I feel like later on you're going to have to go overdrive in adding more complexities in each and showing more of their interaction (but I don't think you'll have a problem with that).

This is amazing. Good luck, and great job!

I just finished reading the first chapter and I thought your story was pretty interesting. I like the way you write and how you're very descriptive. I'll come back and read more when I get the chance. Keep up the good work.

Only got through chapter 1 so far, but I think this is interesting. I like how you don't have the character sugarcoat anything, and the idea of showing the story through all the different points of view is cool!

I've only read the first chapter so far, but I love your brutally honest approach to describing high school. I'm definitely curious about this Catherine Rubin character - can't wait to keep reading!
